- ItemA Systematic Review of Nigerian Articles in Radio Research(Online Journal of Arts, Management and Social Sciences (OJAMSS), 2023-06) Ifeduba, EmmanuelIt is impossible to exaggerate the value of radio in developing nations like Nigeria. It has been essential to national, societal, and educational development. Radio is the most prevalent, accessible, and inexpensive mass media available, especially for rural residents, despite technological breakthroughs that have altered how society functions. This paper examines the research conducted by researchers in Nigeria how radio relates with other aspects of life. The objective of the study was to find out the different areas of research that researchers have covered with in radio research as a medium of mass communication, the research methodology and the theory most preferred by researchers. The study utilized the systematic review and content analysis as methodology for the study. Findings revealed that researchers have focused more on relating radio and health, development, agriculture, education, politics and advertising. The study recommended that researchers should diversify and research on radio and other areas like culture, economy, convergence of the media, sports, climate change etc
- ItemA Sytematic Review of Newspaper- focused Studies In Nigeria(Multidisciplinary Journal of Vocational Education & Research, 2023-05) Ifeduba, EmmanuelNewspapers are the fundamental part of the fourth estate through which information has been and is conveyed. It has been a means to reach audience and disseminate relevant information and news that is either local, national or international. Pertaining to its history in Nigeria, beginning from the time of IweIroyin to contemporary newspapers like punch or the nation, newspapers have continued to have a massive impact on the society. This paper focuses on the 100 annotated bibliography on newspapers written in Nigeria within a specific period of time by researchers. The results of the findings demonstrates that newspaper covers many important areas of which include; politics, security, education, language, crime, management, economy, etc. The paper concludes that newspaper has done basically well in informing, educating the Nigerian audience and most importantly, has been able to uncover some corruptions and scandals through its investigativejournalistic approach. Therefore, the paper recommends that newspaper industry should be looked upon and innovated due to the threats of redundancy being received from the internet. The paper also recommends that government should also empower the industry by promoting policies that will be favor the industry that will bring about the wellbeing of the industry.
- ItemBook Censorship in Nigeria: A Study of Origin, Methods and Motivations, 1805-2018(University of Nebraska - Lincoln, Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal), 2018) Ifeduba, EmmanuelTwenty-first century Nigeria may be described as the era of democracy yet freedom to publish, which is one of the hallmarks of true democracy, seem to be endangered more than ever before. Conversation around this subject has, however, been superficial, lacking in both historical and empirical depth. The aim of this study, therefore, is to investigate the origin, methods and motivations of censorship in Nigeria with a view to deepening the understanding of this phenomenon. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected offline and online using document analysis and interviews were analysed by simple percentages and the constant comparative method. Findings indicate that book censorship began in 1805, over two centuries ago. Eleven methods, including, burning, banning and bombing have been employed and three major motivations (political, religious and socio-cultural) were identified. This study, beyond the conjectures that make up the literature, sheds light not only on the murky history of censorship in Nigeria but also on the emergence of positive censorship—censorship not undertaken by politicians and religious leaders to stifle free speech but by communities, schools and social media to challenge books with culturally immoral contents. This development promises to strengthen the peer review process to the benefit of all stakeholders in the book chain
- ItemBuilding E-Publishing Capacity by E-Collaboration: An African Experience(International Journal of e-Collaboration, 2022) Ifeduba, EmmanuelThe invention of the world wide web made the internet attractive for publishing, offering Africans an opportunity to publish for the global market. Notwithstanding their e-publishing initiatives, emerging business models and competitive e-collaboration with global distribution giants have yet to be adequately interrogated from an empirical perspective. Thisstudy, therefore, describesthe progression of e-publishing from the perspective of e-collaboration. In-depth interviews, website observation, and survey methods were employed in data collection, and 97 purposively selected publishing firmsfilled out a questionnaire offline whereas online data were collected from 82 available publishing websites. Findings indicate that publishers are building e-publishing capacity by launching websites, e-book clubs and online bookshops, collaborating with global giants for distribution, thereby increasing output significantly. This study updates the history of e-publishing, providing hitherto unavailable information on the progression of digital publishing in Africa’s largest economy.
- ItemContemporary Christian Organizations in the Development of Mass Communication in Nigeria: An Exploratory Study(New Media and Mass Communication, 2013) Ifeduba, EmmanuelThe main aim of ‘real’ religion is development. This paper is a study of the contributions of contemporary Christian organizations in Nigeria to the development of Mass Communication in the country and in effect, their contributions to overall national development. Religious organizations have always in their various ways strived to contribute to national development. However, until recently, the contribution could not be said to be remarkable or significant in terms of helping to address issues of national needs. They were not able to make impactful contribution to national development due to regulatory constraints and their participation in developmental activities remained relatively dormant. A number of Christian organizations in the last few years have however contributed to recorded development in the Mass communication industry. While highlighting the various modes that the contribution has taken, the paper attempts to situate the various developmental roles of selected Christian organizations to the print and broadcast subsectors of mass communication in the general framework of development in Nigeria. The paper concludes that while the selected Christian organizations engage the print and electronic media in propagating their religious values, they actively contribute to growth in the advertising industry, training and education, employment generation and promotion of reading culture among others. Contributions to these indices of development make for agreement that these organizations have made input and are still contributing to national development through involvement in the media subsector
- ItemDeveloping and Sustaining Reading Communities in Nigeria:a multimedia approach(International Journal of Management, Social Sciences, Peace and Conflict Studies (IJMSSPCS), 2023-12) Ifeduba, EmmanuelThe aim of this paper is to present an optimistic perspective to the on-going debate on Nigeria’s poor reading culture by proposing a community-based innovative model. The model–The Multi-Media Community Reading Model--is a scholarly renovation of the African concept of community learning which encourages group approach to storytelling. Three concepts: Orality, Community and Convergence are the building blocks with which an attempt is made to take advantage of radio stations, television stations, virtual communities, online forums and online book clubs to encourage an interface between a waning culture and an emerging one, between a weak reading tradition and modernity. It is recommended that pilot reading communities should be introduced by universities and governments, using some identified online and offline communities as demonstration communities. Some Nigeria-based online book clubs are also recommended as possible experimentation platforms.
- ItemDeveloping comprehensive indicators for measuring research impact(Redeemer’s University Journal of Management and Social Sciences, 2022) Ifeduba, EmmanuelThe global debate on the use and misuse of journal impact factor has been raging for several decades with the majority of authors, publishers and other stakeholders clearly admitting that equating journal impact factor to research impact could be misleading. Whereas the former strictly belongs to a journal in which an article is published, the latter belongs strictly to an individual research article or book irrespective of where it is published. On both sides, book citations are poorly factored in. Attempts by universities to equate journal impact factor to research impact for the purpose of employee promotion has only compounded this confusion, making urgent the need to identify and compile a comprehensive list of the indicators that go beyond journal-level impact down to media, classroom, cultural, economic and policy impacts of research. And this is for the benefit of all researchers including those in the poorly served book-based disciplines. This paper presents a list of twenty indicators of impact covering research published in both journals and books.
- ItemDigital Publishing in Nigeria: Evidence of Adoption and Implications for Sustainable Development(JORIND, 2020-06) Ifeduba, EmmanuelAs publishers all over the world embrace digital publishing, it is not clear whether their Nigerian counterparts are adjusting to this new reality or not. This study, therefore, aims at finding out, by way of empirical investigation, whether Nigeria’s publishing houses have adopted any digital publishing innovations in the light of the increasing importance of these innovations for the survival of publishing businesses across the globe. The study is anchored on the Diffusion of Innovation Theory and tries to answer the questions as to the extent of adoption the findings show that new design and printing technologies adopted are evident on the current developments discernible in book covers, cover finishing, impression quality, illustrations and binding. Local publishers now produce books in CD-Rom, audio CD and online through the African Books collective. The implication for sustainable development is that perennial paper problems which could have been overcome with digital distribution systems may persist. Power problems make the future look bleak and deepen the nation’s problem of book-shyness
- ItemDigital Publishing Readiness in Nigeria’s Print Book Market(Global Knowledge, Memory and Communication, 2020) Ifeduba, EmmanuelPurpose The purpose of this study is to examine the extent of production of digital book titles and deployment of e-promotion and how they correlate with school, library, bookshop, consumer and author readiness, with a view to enhancing publishers’ understanding of and participation in e-publishing, which is now crucial for growth and sustainability Design/methodology/approach A questionnaire was completed by 109 publishing firms, 79 publishing websites were observed in search of digital titles and e-promotion, and data were analysed using the SPSS to compute frequencies, percentages and correlates of digital publishing innovation adoption Findings It is found that 2014 digital titles (mainly textbooks and scholarly content) were issued in four formats by 33 out of 109 firms. Authors and consumers were perceived to be more digital-ready than libraries, schools and bookshops. There was a significant relationship between the issuance of digital titles and author readiness (r = 0. 372), consumer readiness (r = 0.338) and library readiness (r = 0.255). There was also a significant relationship between the adoption of e-promotion and consumer readiness (r = 0.381) and author readiness (r = 0.265). Originality/value Book publishing innovation research, especially in Africa, focuses mainly on the adoption of mobile devices, infrastructural challenges and reading habits, paying inadequate attention to the correlates of digital publishing adoption. The results of this study, therefore, shed light on the correlates of digital publishing adoption and should help interested publishers and scholars to understand that author, consumer and library readiness are important determinants of digital publishing adoption, especially in developing economies.
- ItemEffectiveness and Challenges of Using E-books of Opón Ìmò Computer Tablet for Technology Enhanced Learning in Osun State, Nigeria(Journal of Information Science, Systems and Technology, 2020-10) Ifeduba, EmmanuelIn 2013, the school system of Osun State in Nigeria distributed computer devices on which it had installed free pre-loaded textbooks and curriculum-related contents to 25,477 students, as well as teachers in its public secondary schools, for teaching and learning in the schools. The devices were intended to be passed on by graduating students from each level to upcoming students. Shortly after, a debate ensued among those who commended the initiative and those who called for its abolition on the ground that it failed to achieve its set objectives. However, the arguments were mostly not based on findings from empirical research conducted in the school system. This study, therefore, aimed to empirically evaluate the extent to which the project achieved its set objectives. A total of 426 students and teachers in the school system who had been using the devices filled out a questionnaire designed for the study, while five students and four teachers were interviewed. Findings indicate that the project has contributed in democratising access to education in the secondary schools by making textbooks available to poor students who previously had no access to recommended texts, and also enabled thousands of students to improve their information technology skills. However, the project failed to achieve the objective of enabling students in the school system to excel in certificate examinations. A review of the project is recommended to address challenges including student misuse of devices, low teacher morale and weak implementation procedures
- ItemEmergence and Growth of Specialized-Magazines in Nigeria(International Journal of Communication and Performing Arts, 2010) Ifeduba, Emmanuel
- ItemEnlarge Your Research Coast(Redeemer’s University Journal of Management and Social Sciences, 2021) Ifeduba, EmmanuelThe number of research approaches, methods, skills and presentation formats available to a researcher could influence how prolific and productive he or she would be. Notwithstanding, our experience in this journal as well as other journals indicates that quantitative survey research is overwhelmingly favoured in the Social and Management Science fields to the utter neglect of other useful and relevant approaches, methods and presentation formats (Moses, 2020). Though it is expected that quantitative survey designs should be popular with Social Scientists, by limiting all our research activities to this, we limit ourselves. And the truth is that even when a researcher collects large data by survey, it may be possible to present some quantitatively, some qualitatively, some as just data and others as short communication, map, research letter or technical paper. Qualitative data is richer, time consuming, and less amenable to generalization whereas quantitative data is more efficient and better for testing hypotheses, but may miss contextual data (Warren, 2020). There are times to separate them and there are also times to combine them, time to strip a paper of all statistical encumbrances and time to give a paper wings with statistics; time to express an opinion based on existing data and time to comment on a published work. To avail oneself of the opportunities inherent in using diverse methods and designs, the first logical step would be to know the options available and the journals that accept them. In this edition, a range of available options accepted by this journal and some other reputable journals on the publishing websites of Springer, Elsevier, Emerald, Taylor and Francis, Sage, IGI Global, Sabinet Publishers and Common Ground Research Network are presented below:
- ItemErrors in Published Textbooks: A Call for Debate, Research and Remedies(Journal of Information Science, Systems and Technology, 2020) Ifeduba, EmmanuelThis research letter aims to alert various stakeholders in the academic, education, publishing, and other related sectors in Africa to the growing media reports on errors in published books across the continent and the need to begin to address the growing challenge. Embarrassing reports of extensive errors in already distributed textbooks and scholarly books are now frequently reported in national newspapers and the social media, and no discipline is spared. This letter calls on the various stakeholders and actors (authors, content editors, copy editors, reviewers, publishers and approving authorities) and publishing firms to rise up to the discharge of their individual and collective expert, professional and social responsibilities to ensure quality control in book production and publishing processes. It also calls for debate and research to understand the problem and proffer remedies
- ItemEuropean Football Club Newspapers in Nigeria: Gratifications or Media Imperialism?(JORIND, 2011) Ifeduba, EmmanuelThis study is aimed at exploring the contents, uses and gratifications of football club newspapers as an emerging phenomenon. The work is anchored on the Uses and Gratifications theory and the media imperialism theory. Analysis of the contents of nine titles shows that the birth of these newspapers is evidence of an increasing number of Nigerian football fans shifting their support to foreign football clubs. The new media owners are simply responding to the forces of demand and supply with the central objective of meeting an unmet local need for good, professionally organised football. The implication is that even in Nigeria; news of foreign leagues is published by Nigerian citizens to draw readers away from local league, a development which is bound to affect negatively the nations sporting culture. The conclusion is that the fans will continue to patronise these newspapers so long as their needs for good football is not satisfied by any of the existing local newspapers, the obvious cultural implications notwithstanding
- ItemExpanding Media Arena, Communication Skills and Youth Participation in Newspaper Discourse(Journal of Media and Communication Studies, 2016) Ifeduba, EmmanuelIn Nigeria, newspaper arena for youth participation has been expanding in the past ten years, especially with the advent of the Internet. But researchers of youth communication seem to be drawn away from traditional media to Internet-enabled media thereby paying inadequate attention to this phenomenon. And it appears that, due to this inadequate attention, a clear case of increasing inclusiveness in Nigeria’s newspaper industry is scarcely mentioned in literature. This study is, therefore, designed to investigate the claims of expanding newspaper arena and extent of youth contribution to newspaper discourse on the one hand, and the relationship between the extent of their contribution and specified youth characteristics, media agenda-behaviour and topic of discourse on the other. To investigate expanding arena, the study employed content analysis; for youth participation, a survey design, which was triangulated with interview, was adopted. The findings indicate that there is a clear case of expansion of arena because each of the selected newspapers did not only set agenda for youth participation but also dedicated ample space weekly to youth discourse. Interviewed editors of the pages indicated that youths contributed more content than their newspapers needed each week but scored them low on quality of contents contributed (generally average and below average). The statistical measurement of relationship also indicated that there is a moderately significant relationship between extent of youth content creation and perceived adequacy of communication skill. But the relationships found between the extent of content creation and media agenda-behaviour and topic of discourse were insignificant. It was, therefore, recommended that attention should be paid to youth communication capacity building and media literacy to enhance their capacity to contribute to media discourse and national development
- ItemGames and Gambles: How Viewership of Football Games Influences Gambling Behaviour in Nigeria(JORIND, 2020) Ifeduba, EmmanuelScholars indicate that gambling is on the increase in Nigeria and suggest that this could be associated with several factors, including increase in the viewership of the English Premier League (EPL), but there is hardly any empirical evidence to support these claims. This study, therefore, examined the viewership of English Premier League and how it influences the gambling behaviour of Nigerians. Survey research design was triangulated with interviews and website observation. Data were analysed using simple percentages and frequencies computed with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Findings indicate that gambling is on the increase and there is a significant relationship between gambling behaviour and perceived viewership of football games as the literature suggests. However, the results also indicate that gambling advertisements in the media influence gambling behaviour. It is, therefore, recommended that access to league matches featuring sport betting and gambling advertisements should be regulated to curb the escalating incidence of gambling and its damaging effects on the social, economic, psychological and moral health of the society
- ItemHolding Nigerian Press to Account: An Evaluation of Models, Milestones and Sustainability(The Journal of International Social Research, 2014) Ifeduba, EmmanuelSince 1992, seven years before Nigeria returned to democratic paths, the military government in collaboration with several press associations in Nigeria, inaugurated the Nigerian Press Council. The Council’s mandate, among others, is to receive complaints from aggrieved members of the public on the one hand and complaints from aggrieved members of the media on the other, and resolve the cases in one of several specified ways. Twenty years after the inauguration, the council received over 150 complaints but resolved only 17---five by ordering republication, eight by ordering apologies, two by withdrawal and two by retraction. A total of 133 cases could not be resolved for reasons that suggest lack of public trust and political interference. Consequently, a section of the press in 2009 established the Nigerian Ombudsman, a body made up of a retired judge, audience representatives and journalists, without government representatives. In more than four years, the Ombudsman received 17 complaints and resolved none, an indication that the inability to resolve cases may not be a function of lack of public trust or political interference but a matter of modus operandi. This paper argues that both models of press accountability (government/ press collaboration and press self-regulation) have not fulfilled their mandates satisfactorily for reasons that go beyond political interference and lack of trust. It is, therefore, concluded that the second model, if modified, introducing open hearing and free complaints registration procedure, may be more successful and sustainable than both models running concurrently at the moment.
- ItemHow African Churches Africanise Modernity and Modernise Africanity on their Websites(HUMANUS DISCOURSE, 2023) Ifeduba, EmmanuelChristian churches in Africa are increasingly launching websites to take advantage of the ubiquity associated with the Internet. Striving to reach a global audience, they modernise African practices and Africanise modernity for African participants. However, the extent to which this practice constructs Africanity or Africanises modernity is yet to be understood. This study, therefore, examines African church websites with a view to explaining how they walk the tight rope of modernising Africanity and Africanising modernity. An available sample of websites belonging to churches based in Africa was taken. Using content analysis method, 271 church websites were observed and analysed. Findings indicate that271 churches have website presence portraying African models, motifs, flags and sundry images. On the one hand, with African worship styles and cultural adornments, they Africanise modernity; on the other hand, they modernise Africanity with massive use of foreign languages, musical instruments and orchestra.
- ItemHow Communication Noise Erodes Quality and Undermines Learning(Emerald Publishing Limited, 2020) Ifeduba, EmmanuelPurpose – Communication, which is the cornerstone of knowledge creation and transmission, is sometimes undermined by noise often described simply as errors but hardly interrogated as communication noise. Therefore, this paper aims to explain noise from the perspective of communication (content creation, decoding and transmission) with a view to drawing attention to the broad consequences for effective learning. Design/methodology/approach – One aspect of communication noise (errors in textbooks) was purposively selected and an exploration of the Web through the Google and Yahoo search engines generated a purposive sample of 456 valid documents. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the documents was undertaken using content analysis method. Findings – Findings indicate that communication noise is common in textbooks used in many countries, that semantic and factual errors are more frequently experienced, and that the adverse effects touch on teaching, learning and other aspects of life. Originality/value – Scholarly conversation on noise relating to knowledge creation and transmission has revolved mainly around environmental noise in and around libraries and classrooms notwithstanding that communication noise may be more harmful to quality learning than environmental noise. This study, therefore, successfully draws attention to this under-researched phenomenon which is currently adversely affecting effective knowledge delivery all over the world
