Abstract
Industrial processes consume a lot of water in their operations, leading to the generation of a large volume of industrial wastewater. The discharge of this wastewater into the environment without prior treatment constitutes a significant threat to human life and the environment. Several water technologies have been advanced over time for the treatment of these industrial effluents. However, the high costs of some of these conventional water treatment technologies are a major setback for their application and have led to the development of more economically viable alternatives. This chapter covers some of these low-cost technologies and materials that have been developed for the abatement of industrial wastewater pollutants. The chapter opens with the characterization of different types of industrial wastewater based on the type of industry and industrial processes. It then develops into a discussion of the basic principles of different low-cost wastewater treatment technologies with examples of their application for the treatment of industrial wastewater as well as some of the challenges associated with each of these wastewater treatment techniques.
