Influence of State Control on Media Operations in Nigeria
(RUN Contemporary Journal of Politics and Administration, 2023) Ifeduba, Emmanuel
The mass media in every state is a reflection of the system of governance in such state. However, some governments exercise total control on the media, using tools such as repressive laws and policies amongst others. This paper focused on the instruments of direct state control on the media by the government and its influence on media economics in Nigeria. Deregulation of the broadcast industry, repressive laws, and policies were identified as factors that led to either the sanctioning, fining or closure of some media organisations in recent times. It was concluded that direct control of the press by the government in power can influence media economics as the press becomes dependent on media owners and can be affected when there is an existing policy that places a barrier on profit making. The implication is that the demand and supply of news is greatly affected, portraying news as a commodity that could be bought.

Communicating Stability in Nigeria’s Post Covid-19 Scenario
    (Corpus Intellectual, 2023) Talabi, Felix
This year 2022 marks the 84th anniversary of the first known reference to Harold D. Lasswell‟s Model of Communication in 1940. In recognition of his milestone, this paper revisits and applies Lasswell‟s famous construct, “who, said what, in which channel, to whom and with what effect” to the study of post Covid-19 messages emanating from the Federal Government through the media and explores such roles that communication plays thus far in terms of informing the nation‟s landscape on the practical steps being taken to reassure citizens of stability which ranges from life structure, credible and viable workable strategies that are of mutual benefits. The essence for the desirability of stability is to cushion the effect on Covid-19 on the nation‟s landscape which would also serve as a protective assurance against any form of further future crisis situation and helps the government to maintain connection with societal reality, available social resources and citizen‟s expectations. This is achieved by adopting a Qualitative approach using Key Informant Interview (KII) to generate data from sampled Communication, Sociology, Economics and Political Science scholars, as this was analysed thematically to ascertain who should communicate what, in which channel, to whom and with what effect, in Nigeria‟ spost Covid- 19 scenario. The sampling technique is purposive and Key Informants were selected based on their wide knowledge in the areas of Communication, Sociology, Economics and Political Science discipline. Lasswell‟s model plays a significant role in how the Government is conveying stability messages in post Convid-19 era to the masses through the media and the effect this is having on them, as there is need to ascertain the level of assurance the citizens have and the implication of this study is that, the Government would be able to clearly identify what should be communicated to who in what channel and expected effect in forms of feedback in post future pandemics. The study suggests further research on the „why‟ dimension in the communication process in post emergency crisis situation such as Covid-19.

Selected Private Newspapers’ Coverage of Nigeria’s Debt Profile
(Journal of African films and Diaspora Studies (JAFDIS), 2023-12) Talabi, Felix
The media plays an important role in monitoring government actions and holding them accountable by enlightening the public about the political, social, and economic challenges facing society. In line with the functions of the press, the study looked into how the media covered President Buhari’s administration’s debt profile. Nigeria’s rising debt profile attracted public outcry, hence the need to look at the newspapers’ coverage of the debt profile. To understand how Nigeria's debt under President Buhari's administration was portrayed, this study analysed two newspapers’ coverage of the country's debt profile. The analysis focused on The Punch and The Guardian Newspapers, examining a total of 1,095 editions published from January 2019 to December 2021. From this pool, 502 editions were sampled, and findings showed that the Nigerian media, during President Buhari's government, predominantly presented straight news reports that had a negative tone when discussing Nigeria's debt profile. The researchers suggest that print media should give greater prominence to stories related to the debt profile in order to enhance public awareness about the impact of debt on the country's economy. Additionally, it recommends that the media publish more exclusive and comprehensive editorials, as well as feature stories that provide in-depth analysis, information, and insights into Nigeria's debt profile. In summary, the study underscores the importance of the media in informing the public about Nigeria's debt situation. It calls for increased coverage, in various forms, to shed light on the implications of the country's debt profile and ensure a more comprehensive understanding of the topic among the general population.
