- ItemEducation and the Challenge of Social Cohesion in Africa(Humanus Discourse; AJournal of the Faculty of Humanities, Redeemer's University, Ede, Osun State, 2025) Modupe Olajumoke ADUThis paper was informed by the contribution of Julius Nyerere’s education for self-reliance and its pragmatic impact on education today. This brings about an understanding that knowledge should not just be for knowledge’s sake but should order a course in the individual and society at large. Beyond Nyerere’s recommendation, this paper argues for a form of education that is geared towards attitudinal and social re-orientation, which will bring about social cohesion in Africa. In carrying out such task there should be an educational reformation at all levels of learning that will engender harmonious living in the society. This paper submits that education, just like the Socratic recommendation should be geared towards enlightenment and social orientation that will instil the right values, which will consequently foster a peaceful coexistence across tribes, ethnicities, and religions in Nigeria.
- ItemImmanuel Kant's Socio-ethical Philosophy and it's Refinement by John Rawls(APPON PHILOSPHICAL QUATERLY: A JOURNAL OF ASSOCIATION OF PROFESSIONAL PHILOSOPHERS OF NIGERIA, 2024-09) Modupe Olajumoke ADUThis research examines the evolution of the idealist conception of liberal political thought from Immanuel Kant to John Rawls. This research traces the evolution of key liberal principles which includes reason, individual autonomy, and social justice through works the works of these two prominent philosophers. Kant's categorical imperatives and kingdom of ends served as the foundation upon which Rawls' theory of justice as fairness was built. Rawls went further to develop a more comprehensive understanding of liberal principles to address issues such as distributive justice and the role of the state. The paper submits that liberal political thought as pushed forward by Kant and Rawls is a valuable framework for understanding contemporary political challenges. - ItemRELIGIOUS POLITICIZATION, OMỌLÚÀBÍ ETHOS AND SOCIO-RELIGIOUS HARMONY(Izu: Journal of Critical Perspectives, 2024) Modupe Olajumoke ADUThe Yoruba is one of the major ethnic groups in Nigeria, a country that is plagued with religious tensions and hostilities. The country adopts no religion in principle but in practice, recognizes mainly Christianity and Islam while neglecting the traditional religions and others. The Yoruba through its regional government, which is based on its cultural values, has been able to recognize and give a sense of belonging to all the religions within its borders. Omọlúàbí ethos is foundational to Yoruba culture and embodies values such as integrity, kindness, and communal respect. In the traditional Yoruba society, these values served as a unifying factor and fostered a culture of socio-religious tolerance. The Yoruba region within Nigeria is the most peaceful despite its religious diversity. However, in recent times, socio-religious tensions within Yoruba communities have been exacerbated due to the erosion of these principles. This research argues that the re-emergence of the Omọlúàbí ethos can mitigate religious tensions, promote respect across socio-religious boundaries, and enhance communal relationships. This study emphasises the significance of cultural renewal in tackling contemporary socio-religious issues by presenting Omọlúàbí as a moral and ethical framework for social cohesion and peaceful coexistence in religiously diverse societies.
