Abstract
Politics is now taken as the accumulation, organization and utilization of power and money in a society. •
But in a religious pluralistic nation as Nigeria, where each religion claims to uphold certain virtues and all
political office holders claim adherences to one religion or the other, should political crimes be the order
of the day? The problem is that, when religious belief are detached from both the historical context and
the circumstances in which they are held and expressed, any interpretation of them is likely to be highly
distorted. This work examines how religion affects either negatively or positively political ideology in
Nigeria. There is no religion without its virtues but how are these virtues translated into behavioral
patterns in Nigerian politics? Virtues in Nigerian politics seem belated. Hence it is discovered in this work
that this criminal state of affairs was made possible because of the attitude and activities of some religious
leaders, which we consider to be collusive and permissive.
