dc.description.abstract | Global trade agreements have fueled a positive drastic changes in cargo tonnage handled at the ports in most developing economies. Remarkably, in the case of Nigeria, the Tin Can Island Port has witnessed a significant rise in cargo, largely due to the reforms in port management in the country. In this regards, most related studies seems to be biased towards the developed economics. However, with the increasing threat of cargo spoilage and delay coupled with numerous issues relating to cargo handling at the Tin Can Island Port in Nigeria. This study seeks to examine both socio-economic and cargo handling characteristics at the Tin Can Island Port in Nigeria. The methodology involves both the qualitative and the quantitative methods. The data is analysed with descriptive and chi-square statistical analytical techniques. The study reveals that socio economic characteristics especially age of workers in cargo handling activities still influenced the capacity at the port. The study shows there is a significant relationship between perception of cargo traffic level and change in cargo handling procedure at the Tin Can Island port. In addition, it shows there is a significant relationship between policy adoption and cargo handling improvement at the port. | en_US |
