This paper focuses on niche applications of polymer optical fibre (POF) in modern communication systems and other related areas. The electromagnetic isolation of POF and its relatively high sensitivity compared to conventional sensors has earned it a centre stage in sensing technology. The ability to detect and measure physical parameters such as temperature, humidity and wind speed makes POF suitable for real-time monitoring of environmental and climatic conditions. Other attractive features of POF include a lower cost compared with glass optical fibres, better fracture resistance and flexibility.en_US
