Although researchers have studied silence as a form of nonverbal communication in Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus, little attention has been paid to other aspects of nonverbal communication in the novel. This paper explores kinesics in Chimamanda Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus. Different aspects of kinesics found in the text include gestures, haptics, and postures and these have been effectively used by the writer to project the characters in the novel. The analysis reveals that the functions of these kinetic variables include supplementing, reinforcing and regulating verbal exchanges, revealing emotional states/personality traits, and indicating likes/dislikes of individuals/situations/ideas. The study gives the reader an insight into the characters and the relationships they have with one another in the novel.en_US
