Abstract
In most traditional African societies old age is highly revered and seen as a crucial factor in determining who gets to hold positions of authority power, privilege and leadership. Most people in the African social structure view elderly individuals as wise, vulnerable and powerful. In exchange, people greatly respect, support and care for the elderly. The traditional African system of caring for the elderly has, however been severely undermined by modern changes in the organization of African society, which have a detrimental effect on the care and support of the elderly. Based on the aforementioned, this paper investigates how undergraduates view and treat the elderly This study was conducted in two purposively selected private universities in Osun State, Nigeria, it used both a questionnaire survey and an in-depth interview to gather information from study participants. Contrary to previous research conducted in Europe and America the results showed that most young people and adolescents in Nigeria not only have good perceptions of the elderly but also continue to care for them.
