Abstract
Bad financial news is everywhere! With bank and corporate
failures, stock market losses and a depressed housing market,
rising unemployment and inflation. Simply put, from time to
time the financial world fall victim to unbridled greed—the
unchecked lust to make money in spite of great risks. True
perspective is lost, as when a gambler on a roll thinks his luck
will last forever. Eventually his luck runs out. This is the case of
Nigeria on over-reliance on oil. Like the prodigal son in the
New Testament, Nigeria out of greed and self centredness
removed God from her plan and eventually plunged herself
into prolonged economic recession. To say that the people in
government are ignorant of what to do will be an aberration
but more often than not, they lack the political will and this
coupled with the Nigerian factor (deceit and corruption) any
policy will hardly be made any sustainable. To achieve its
purpose in this paper, historico-critical as well as contextual
methods were adopted in order to get to the root of the
problem.
