This paper looks at the scenographic recommendations of some plays. In particular, it examines the language and methods used in the prescription of scenery to see how they affect the designer's imagination in the area of creative scenery. This paper is a study of the styles of 5 Nigerian playwrights and classifies them into 3 groups. One of them is definitely autocratic in approach, and in a manner that is prohibitive to creativity in scenery. This is because all things are hardly equal technically as contrary situations do occur. This paper compares Olu Obafemi's method with other 4 playwrights who would rather give a "clue" of the required atmosphere to be pictured out in the understanding between the artistic director and scenic designer. This paper favours a recommendation that offers creative interpretation of the script rather than an imposition of the playwright's envisaged ambience, which often contradicts expectations and falls short of different production atmospheres—both in space and material.en_US
