- ItemApplication of ICT and job performance of administrative staff in Redeemer’s University, Nigeria(Nigerian Library Association, Gombe State Chapter, 2022-03-20) Alabi, Stephen OlakunleThis study examines and explores the application of information communication technology by Redeemer’s University’s administrative staff and its impact on their job performances. The study employed a descriptive research design using the questionnaire instrument for data collection. The population consists of 50 administrative staff of Redeemer's University. A total enumerative sampling was adopted for the study. The data collected were analyzed using frequency, percentages, and tables. The findings revealed that most participants use ICT tools to perform their official duties. It also revealed that the respondents found it easy to use ICT tools. The findings further revealed that the use of ITC tools helped the participants to achieve quality work output. It also revealed that electricity interruption and limited ICT tools were the challenges faced by the respondents. Based on the study's findings, the researchers recommended that the Management of universities provide a constant supply of electricity. It was also recommended that government should support universities in the procurement of ICT tools to ensure the quality performance of staff duties.
- ItemAwareness and Compliance of Science-Based Researchers to Legal Deposit Obligations in Nigeria(Archlib & Information Services Ltd, 2024-10-15) Alabi, Stephen OlakunleThis paper investigated the awareness and compliance of science-based researchers to legal deposit obligations in Southwest Nigeria. Survey research was adopted. A purposive sampling technique was used for the study. Thirty-five scientists from eight research institutes and centres volunteered to participate in the study. Data were collected with the questionnaire. The collected data was analysed using descriptive statistics with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0. The findings showed that science-based researchers in research institutes in Nigeria had a low awareness of their legal deposit obligations. The findings also revealed that their compliance with the legal deposit obligations was equally low. The study recommended that public enlightenment and sensitisation campaigns, monetary incentives, designating specific personnel for legal deposit campaigns and collection in research institutes and an upward review of the penalty for non-compliance be put in place by the National Library of Nigeria as motivating factors for awareness and compliance.
- ItemClient Retention in a Competitive Environment: The Information Professional Perspective(2015-06-15) Alabi, Stephen OlakunleThe increasing awareness and use of information for different purposes have resulted in the establishment of various information service providers which have the capacity to compete for survival with libraries in providing users with timely, adequate and relevant information in the preferred formats. Information professionals therefore need to respond to such challenges in the quest to enhance the use of their resources and services. This paper therefore looks at the competitive nature of the information environment, identifies the library competitors, rationales for promoting library operations and services, skills acquisition by information professionals as strategies for client retention in libraries. The paper recommends that: libraries should start thinking of plans or modalities to carry out research on customer survey; the need for library managers to be aggressive in soliciting for funds for library support. The paper also recommends the regular organization of training and development programme for skills acquisition by information professionals.
- ItemICT Skills and Use of Electronic Resources by Undergraduates in Selected Faith-based Private University libraries in South-west, Nigeria(the Association of Information Professionals of Nigeria, 2020-12-20) Alabi, Stephen OlakunleThe study investigated ICT skills and use of e-resources by undergraduates in selected private university libraries in South-west, Nigeria. Survey research was adopted. The population of the study was 4,913 undergraduates. Stratified Sampling technique was used to draw a sample size of 370. Data were collected with questionnaire. The result of the hypothesis showed that there was significant relationship between ICT skills and use of electronic resources (r = 0.204, p<0.05). The variable influenced the use of e-resources among undergraduates in faith-based private universities, in South-west, Nigeria. The findings showed that majority of undergraduates use e-resources for finding relevant information in their studies’ areas and assignment writing. The findings also showed that undergraduates possessed high ICT skills, although their formulating search queries and searching and retrieval skills were low. The study recommended that undergraduates should upgrade their ICT skills.
- ItemOccupational Stress and Psychological Health of Employees of University Libraries in Osun State, Nigeria(IGI Global Scientific Publishing, 2021-04-17) Alabi, Stephen OlakunleThis study examined the influence of occupational stress on the psychological health of the employees of university libraries in Osun State, Nigeria. A random sample of 32 participants from selected university libraries in Osun State, Nigeria was used. The result of the hypothesis revealed a weak positive correlation between occupational stressors and psychological health status (N = 32, r = 0.427, p = 0.015). The test also shows a weak positive correlation between the level of occupational stress and psychological health status (N = 32, r = 0.493, p = 0.004). The study concluded that employees who do not experience work-related stress would enjoy good health. The study also recommended that the management of university libraries should ensure that they provide mentorship, funds, internet facilities, and encouragement to their employees to ensure a stress-free work environment so that library employees would continue to enjoy good health.
- ItemOrganization and Use of Newspapers in Two Nigerian Private University libraries(ELK Education Consultant Pvt. Ltd., 2015-09-11) Alabi, Stephen OlakunleThis study seeks to investigate the methods of organizing newspaper as well as its uses in Redeemer’s University (RUN) and Babcock University (BU) Libraries. The study also seeks to find-out reasons why the users of the selected libraries are making use of the Newspapers and to what extent are their needs been met. The study adopts the use of Survey method. The sampling technique used in this research was random sampling. 20% of the selected libraries’ sitting capacity (Main & Serials Units) was used for this research, giving a total number of 170 i.e. 96 and 74 that cut across Colleges in Redeemer’s University and Babcock University respectively. Newspaper indexing and bounding are the common methods used in the selected libraries. Entertainment and Education information are kinds of common information sought by the students in RUN and Babcock. Furthermore, this study reveals that male students are more interested in Sport information than their female counterparts, whereas female students prefer Entertainment information than male students. The study find-outs that there is no significant difference in methods used in organizing newspapers and their uses by students among the selected private university libraries.
- ItemUse of Electronic Resources by Undergraduates in Selected Private University libraries in South-west, Nigeria(Archlib & Information Services Ltd, 2021-04-24) Alabi, Stephen OlakunleThe purpose of this study is to focus on the use of electronic resources by undergraduates in three private university libraries in South-west, Nigeria. It further seeks to examine the frequency of use of e-resources and problems encountered by undergraduates while using electronic resources. A survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study was 4,913 undergraduates of mission-owned private universities in South-west, Nigeria. A stratified sampling technique was used to draw a sample size of 370. Data was collected with a questionnaire. The findings showed that the majority of the respondents used e-resources to find relevant information in their area of studies; wrote term papers/did their assignments, and updated their knowledge. The findings also showed that e-resources were regularly used among undergraduates. The study concluded that poor connectivity and electricity failure constituted the major challenges to the use of eresources among undergraduates. The study recommended that efforts should be made by universities and library management in the selected institutions to improve on the bandwidth and enhance the Internet connectivity.
