- ItemAppraisal of Ferry Terminals Design Compliance to Guidelines for Universal Accessibility in Lagos State Nigeria(International Journal of Recent Technology and Engineering (IJRTE), 2020-03) Izobo-Martins, OladunniAccessibility of public buildings has been an issue of global interest and importance in the society in recent times. It has been promoted by the need to ensure universal equality and end discrimination of persons either based on size, ability and mobility disorder. Given the important role of water transportation in aiding mobility, movement of goods and services in coastal cities such as Lagos, this study reviewed the compliance of design, construction and operation of Ferry Terminals towards accessibility of users. The research adopts the case study approach and interviews in appraising the three existing Ferry Terminals in Lagos State, Nigeria for accessibility compliance. The case study involved observation and evaluation of the facilities, and the interviews focused on 18 of the ‘facilities operators and passengers’ about their experiences of associated facilities. Findings from the study revealed poor compliance to accessibility in both the external and internal environments. As such, there is a high degree of limitation in use of the facilities for all facets of water travel; from building approach; waiting, boarding and disembarking areas. Existing facilities have inadequate accessibility and are below standards to ensure use by all and without discrimination or segregation of users. It is therefore imperative for Ferry terminal buildings and amenities to be accessible in effectively enabling all users achieve true mobility in barrier-free environments that foster user-comfort through the adoption and application of universal design principles.
- ItemArchitects’ View on Design Consideration that Can Reduce Maintenance Cost(Mediterranean Journal of Social Sciences, 2018-05) Izobo-Martins, OladunniBuildings are designed with the intent of lasting for a certain period of time. Building maintenance in different building typology is described as multi-faceted activities which involve planning, directing, controlling and organizing resources for the sustenance of the building’s physical, functional and operational performance. The research focused on ways cost of maintaining a building was done, effectively or efficiently with the influence of the design approach used. Literatures of works pertaining to building maintenance were reviewed to identify the various impacts, influences that a building design would have on the cost of maintaining any building type. Maintenance departments of educational institutions were surveyed and data analyzed. The study revealed that maintenance culture of buildings could either be positive or negative, based on the quality of design approach used. The study recommends a proper review of building codes and regulations by organizations intending to erect building structures with a view of designers to specified standards and prevent excess maintenance cost in the future
- ItemAssessing Community Engagement in Tourism Planning and Development in Nigeria: A Case Study of Arinta Waterfall Tourist Resort, Ipole Iloro Ekiti State(Transnational Journal of Science and Technology, 2012-05) Izobo-Martins, OladunniTourism development and finance is seen as a very viable means of economic development for any country. Apart from generating wealth for the economy, tourist sites also enhance community cohesion and promote peace within the host community. Tourism needs a high level of planning and this has to involve the local community in order for them to have a sense of attachment to the site. This paper reviews the Arinta Waterfall in Iloro Ekiti, Nigeria. it presents the report of a research into how engaged the members of the community are regarding the resort. Interviews were held with key stakeholders in the community and in the state planning authority. Questionnaires were also distributed among staff of the resort as well as community members randomly. The result shows that the community members don’t feel attached to the tourist site hence; there is a strong tendency for them to blame the lack of development and public awareness of the resort of the government officials. This paper however recommends that Community engagement and impact of development must be given high cognisance as lack of community acceptance can have adverse effect on any development; and that there is a need for tourism promotion and awareness. It is indeed disheartening when majority of people living in a neighbourhood are oblivious of the vast natural endowment within their community. Community interest and social capital can be developed through coordinated attempts and effort by the developers and planners by designing sustainable means of engaging with local community groups
- ItemAssessing Users’ Perceptions of the Current Maintenance Disorder of Public Secondary School in Ogun, Nigeria(Journal of Building Construction and Planning Research, 2020-03) Izobo-Martins, OladunniThe challenges facing public schools are multifaceted and include: teachers dissatisfaction, non-commitment of educators, chronic absenteeism by educators, low morale, poor work ethics by educators, late coming of both educators and learners, overcrowding in classes, lack of technical resources and many more. A cursory investigation of public secondary school build ings in Ado-Odo/Ota L.G.A shows its deplorable conditions of structural, aesthetical and decorative disrepair. Therefore the paper focused on ex amining users “perception of the present deplorable physical condition and neglect of public secondary school. The study engaged the use of quantita tive method of analysis, employing the use of questionnaire administered randomly and distributed face-to-face to targeted despondences”. The re sult of findings revealed performance/productivity of building users de pends largely on working and learning condition of building. The outcomes of the research would help policy makers, facilities maintenance experts and professionals alike to device a policy for regular maintenance of public building in other to enhance performance and increase productivity amongst users.
- ItemAssessment of Poor Housing in Informal Settlement, Ogun State, South Western, Nigeria(International Journal of Applied Environmental Sciences, 2018) Izobo-Martins, OladunniThis paper examines the influence of poverty on housing in informal settlement. Housing ownership has become a paramount thing in Nigeria, due to high cost of rent. This has resulted in informal settlement and sustaining those buildings has become hectic as a result of poverty. This research work was carried out in order to highlight and examine the influence of poor housing on the health and behaviour of the residents in the study area. Data for the study were generated from both primary and secondary school sources, and were equally analyzed through Descriptive statistics. The sampling population was 250 respondents who are representative of the house heads. Findings from the study revealed that the area chosen for the study exhibit slum condition that has denied impact on the socio-economic lifestyles and the health of the residents, as well as the general outlook of the environment. The study then concludes that people should design and build their houses based on their income rather than hoping for a better future. The study also recommends public campaign, to educate the dwellers on the need for good building condition as well to know the danger of abusing their environment
- ItemThe Domestic Architecture in Benin, A Good Place for Building Resilience(BEST: International Journal of Humanities, Arts, Medicine and Sciences (BEST: IJHAMS), 2015-03) Izobo-Martins, OladunniThe domestic architecture in Benin has undergone an elastic process evolution from the pre-colonial period to the post-independence period. This is so because the people of Benin developed a social system which resulted in a transition process of traditional values that are firmly rooted in the past that will not endanger the future. The paper identified key concepts of resilience/vulnerability in the context of community vulnerable to the built environment, using a case study of Benin domestic architecture as methodology. The case study focuses on the resilience of core area houses to the influence of modern building styles while considering climate change on the city in the last few years as it affect resilience to core area planning and core area building materials within city. The result of the findings showed the core area buildings are vulnerable to change due to urbanization and climate change issues but at the time the building quite resilient and adaptive to transformation issues due to some factors which are outside the scope of this study
- ItemEvaluation of Canaanland Camp House B, Ota, Ogun State(International Journal of Scientific & Engineering Research, 2014-07) Izobo-Martins, OladunniPost Occupancy Evaluation (POE) has been identified as one of the key methodologies in identifying the performance of buildings. It is important for building industry professionals as well as end users to understand the efficiency and effectiveness of their buildings through proper analysis of feedback. The purpose of POE is to improve how buildings are constructed by reducing design and maintenance costs, enhancing occupant satisfaction, comfort, and performance, and to increase return on building owners’ investments. This paper adopts a strategic review using POE in an investigative format with particular focus the Camp House B which served as accommodation for post-graduate students of Covenant University and lodging for groups on spiritual programmes. A survey was carried out using a structured questionnaire as research instrument. The 48 Masters students of architecture representing 30.57% of the total of 157 Post Graduate students were chosen as the sample. The study variables were analyzed using descriptive statistics, tests for correlations and significant relationships were established. The results show significant correlation between the time spent in the rooms and the perceived air quality of the building and significant relationship between adequacy of room space and change in needs of the occupant. The paper concludes with results that show relative user comfort in the buildings and rated the buildings condition as good with a rating of 2.88/4.00. The paper recommends concerted efforts towards improving plumbing services and the inclusion of passive cooling features in design solutions.
- ItemHarnessing Nature for Leisure and Creativity in Lagos Tourism and Planning(International Journal of Innovative Technology and Exploring Engineering (IJITEE), 2020) Izobo-Martins, OladunniThis study reviews the recent quantitative and qualitative evidence on the need to develop our natural environments for creative and leisure purposes. Previous studies described the problem of tourism to be a universal one, as virtually all countries are faced with the problem of providing inadequate tourism for their citizens. In Nigeria urban centres the tourism conditions were not properly documented. The study investigated the tourism condition in Lagos, Nigeria. The study observed that tourism condition in the nation is presently not provided for all citizenry. The need of the majority was not considered while some of the existing few are in deplorable condition. Previous literatures reviewed shows that almost 75 percent of tourist centres are for children meaning they lack creative environment. This paper also attempts to discuss in detail the little infrastructural evidences that exists in tourism. Fifteen centres were selected and eight were investigated in this study. The study discuss the consistency of findings across Lagos State, using different methodological approaches with consideration to the major key compares the magnitudes of developing natural environment. The study adopted questionnaire as the tool for the investigation, the tool was randomly administered after which the outcomes were analysed with the use of Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, SPSS version 16. Furthermore, aside that personal observation data was also recorded. The study identifies the emerging policy, business opportunity strategy and activities for good governance and better environment. Service provider should be willing to create the inspiration garden in other to have a greater benefits and more patronage. Since most of the centres investigated are static in nature, the study suggested that in the future, research should focus on the analysis of respondent welfare in a dynamic sense
- ItemThe Impact of Architectural Studio Conditions on Students' Creativity(2017-07) Izobo-Martins, OladunniStudents’ creativity varies from one person to another. One of the contributing factors is the studio conditions. Over the years it has been observed that the creativity of architecture students has been on a decline. This study was carried out to investigate the conditions of the architectural studio and how it affects student’s creativity. One hundred and eighty questionnaires were distributed and one hundred and fifty three retrieved among architecture students who make use of the studios to get their responses on the impact of the physical environment around them. This was investigated through careful analysis of both internal and external factors such as daylight, ventilation colour and seat arrangement. It was observed that students’ creativity was subjective to individuals as these physical features affected them differently. The outcome of the research would help in ascertaining the relationships between the indoor and outdoor physical conditions of the studio and the students’ creativity in order to provide a well suitable learning environment for the architectural students
- ItemImpact of Urban Regulations on the Residents in Lagos, Nigeria(2015) Izobo-Martins, OladunniUrbanization in Nigeria has been on the increase, especially in Lagos states due to rapid developments. A critical assessment of the current urban land policy and existing strategies has shown that land schemes have not made the desired result. Land rules and regulations have not been observed holistically by the residents. However, some deficiencies are found in the existing rules and its implementation. The entire land rules and regulations objectivity are in the right perspective, still the level of enforcement seems to be low. Planning permission and building regulation are both the responsibility of the local planning authority. While planning permission is to erect or extend a building, building regulation defines how the new building must be constructed. The Lagos state government has initiated a more harmonize activities of Ministry of Physical Planning and Development, the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning (LASURP), the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, (LAWMA) and the Ministry of Environment regarding enforcement, administration, approval of building document and demolition of illegal structures. The study focused on urbanization problems in the city, together with the issues of planning permission. Furthermore, the quality of the urban environment as well as ascertain a correlation between approved buildings and laws. The paper a requirement to strengthen the planning rules and regulations; this can be achieved by employing more fully competent professionals.
- ItemImpacts of Drafting Media on Students’ Design Studio Productivity in Some Selected Universities of South-West, Nigeria(Psychology and Education, 2021-04) Izobo-Martins, OladunniOver the years, it is expected that in design studio, the learning gained in different courses must be incorporated into the plan procedure keeping in mind the end goal to locate an ideal answer for the design problem. The article describes the result of the project “impacts of drafting media on student’s productivity in design studio in selected schools in South West Nigeria” aimed at evaluating the two drafting media and the effect of each on student’s productivity outcome in design studio. Design students should learn by experiencing, reflecting, thinking and practicing during the time spent discovering answers for allotted design problems for productive outcomes in design studio irrespective of the drafting style used. The significance is essential at this time when unemployment is in a top gear. This study would provide valuable insight into the medium of drafting that is most productive for students of Architecture in other to prepare them for good job opportunity. The study adopted a mixed approach method of data collection and analysis. The result was presented using descriptive approach with the aid of a photographic images for easy understanding. The result of the survey suggests that both manual and digital drafting are very much relevant. Even as technological approaches to design continue to evolve, the old-fashioned drafting method is still very relevant and should not be evaporated from the curriculum, not only in South-West Nigeria, but also across the globe. The results brought about the question of the connection between these drafting media and students’ productivity. There is a limit to the generalization of the results of this study since only students in University of Lagos, Covenant University and Bells University were selected as the sample frame because there are many more schools within Lagos and Ogun state
- ItemInfrastructure Conditions in Public Secondary Schools, Ogun State Nigeria(International Journal of Civil, Structural, Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering Research and Development (IJCSEIERD), 2014-10) Izobo-Martins, OladunniIt is widely believed that all is not well with the facilities and infrastructure in public schools in Nigeria. However studies have shown that maintenance activities go on in these institutions but the intensity and magnitude may be inadequate. The Study examines the availability and condition of infrastructures in Public Secondary School buildings in Ado-Odo/ Ota L.G.A, Ogun State, Nigeria. The study used descriptive survey research method and stratified random sampling technique to sample Thirty-Six Public Secondary Schools out of Forty-Seven in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area. Data were collected using questionnaire and observation methods. The analysiswas done through descriptive statistics and chi square tests. The result shows that user attitude, maintenance culture and lack of fund have major influence on the present condition of the existing infrastructures.It was observed that a sizeable portion of the infrastructures in the Public Secondary School are in the state of disrepair and there is high need for resolving them. This paper concludes that if proper attention is given to school infrastructures there will be improvements in the Public Secondary School building Condition in Ado-Odo. Ota L. G. AOgun State.
- ItemInvestigating the User’s Satisfaction of Women in Kitchen Design(International Journal of Mechanical Engineering and Technology (IJMET), 2018-12) Izobo-Martins, OladunniThis paper presents a dedicated investigation on the influence of women in kitchen design. It attempts to highlight through practical description, the specific expectations of typical Nigerian women on how their kitchen spaces should be designed and organized. The aim of this study is to investigate women expectation in an ideal kitchen design for residential houses in Nigeria. The study adopted the questionnaire survey technique to collect the main users’ expectation about their kitchens to help designers to deeply understand, organize and implement their needs. The respondents were selected from Federal housing estate, Iyana Ipaja, Lagos State and Covenant University Staff Estate, Canaan Land Ota, Ogun State. SPSS 14 was utilized to evaluate the demands and expectations of women in the study. The Research indicates that women desire to carry out more tasks in the kitchen. The findings shows that women desire for an ideal kitchen is to be designed and organized to suit their busy life styles but much less has been focused on by Architects in their designs. The study concludes that the kitchen design should be taken more serious in a typical Nigerian house in other to make mothers happy on whose shoulders the huge social cultural expectations lies.
- ItemInvestigation of Circulation and Users Comfort in Secondary School Buildings in Kaduna, Nigeria(Solid State Technology, 2020) Izobo-Martins, OladunniThe circulation system of secondary schools in Kaduna State, Nigeria requires attention as not every potential user finds it comfortable to cope with movement within the school buildings in the study area. The current condition in which the school buildings are in does not encourage inclusiveness within the society. To address this challenge, policies on school building designs should be made to inculcate a circulation system that will be used comfortably by every potential user of educational facilities. This research examined the condition of educational facilities within the study area. Data was collected via questionnaires administered to users of secondary schools within the study area. The data collected were analysed using a descriptive analysis tool called SPSS. The research found out that even though the existing circulation elements within the study area are not constructed according to recommended architectural standards, majority of the users of the educational facilities in which the research was carried out within the study area were comfortable with their movement in the facility. This result is suspected to be given because majority of the respondents have no physical disability. The research also found out that the most preferred vertical circulation element is lift, however they are very costly to install and maintain as a result of the energy required to make them function regularly. Therefore, ramps are recommended to be used as circulation elements in secondary schools in conjunction with a platform lift to bridge the gap that the ramp is expected to occupy in order to achieve a comfortable slope and enable space saved to be used for functional purposes.
- ItemMaintenance of Public Secondary School Buildings: Users’ Practices in Nigeria(2015) Izobo-Martins, OladunniThe sustainability of infrastructure in public secondary schools in Nigeria requires an attention. One of the ways to attain this is the adoption of maintenance strategies and policies. The application of maintenance strategies among various users demands urgency for policy formation. The study examined the secondary school building conditions and users opinions in Nigeria. The study data were collected through questionnaire administered on the users of the public secondary school buildings in the study area. The data collected were subjected to descriptive statistical tool. The study found out that there are maintenance attempts by the school principals in one way or the other. None of the selected school has a maintenance manual and definite strategy in place. Also the users’ attitudes and lack of maintenance funds are major factors to the dilapidated condition of the secondary school buildings. The study recommends a need for more governance support, development of policy and users’ awareness on the essence of maintenance as a practice in Nigeria
- ItemPedagogic Integration of Cultural Art-knowledge Contents into Architecture curriculum: Teachers’ Gestalt Acculturation Experience(Covenant International Journal of Psychology (CIJP), 2018-06) Izobo-Martins, OladunniMost communities of the world acculturate their own identity by the inculcation of art cultures into the spines of citizenry education. Right from the pre-school stage to higher level education, it has been observed that the Art knowledge contents have skewed away from the gate keepers‟ (Accreditation bodies) expectations and requirements in most schools today. The aim of this study is to evaluate the current art knowledge contents in the selected Universities‟ curricula in order to integrate the relevant art knowledge ingredients into the architecture curricula in southwest Nigeria. The methodology employed qualitative-content analysis on the secondary data retrieved from the curriculum of schools, Community Charrette guidelines and art-oriented pedagogic activities. The results yielded pedagogic indices from Art-based curriculum integration, Tenets from hidden curriculum, Gestalt Acculturation experiences and architectural design studio exhibitions of works. The study recommended that relevant pedagogic knowledge Art-culture content (PKC) should be integrated pragmatically into the curricula of schools to preserve the art cultures in architectural Identity and design practices of the future professionals.
- ItemPitfalls and Projections of Secondary School Education in Nigeria(The International Journal Of Humanities & Social Studies, 2018-02) Izobo-Martins, OladunniEducation plays an important role in the development and globalization of any nation. It is the bedrock of social change and can often be described as an accelerator of social and economic progress. Secondary school education in Nigeria is the bridge between primary education and tertiary education. However, with as much importance as it carries, secondary school education in Nigeria is faced with a myriad of problems ranging from insufficient government funding to poor maintenance of infrastructure. This paper is aimed at highlighting some of the current problems stifling the development of secondary school education in Nigeria by addressing issues such as poor government funding, unavailability of infrastructure, poor maintenance of provided infrastructure, under qualified teachers, and poor supervision of schools. The study adopted exploratory research methodology through literature and documentary survey. This paper concludes that in order to achieve major improvements in secondary school education, the need to re evaluate the priorities of the country in favor of education must be addressed. Also, issues of government funding must be re-addressed, governments should ensure that schools are properly and effectively supervised and inspected and extra effort needs to be put into ensuring adequately qualified teachers are recruited and remunerated accordingly, all in an effort to achieve meaningful development in secondary school education in Nigeria.
- ItemPrefiguring Houses in a Traditional City: A Case for Benin House Types and Characteristics(Journal of Architecture and Urbanism, 2018) Izobo-Martins, OladunniHouse mean different things to different people. House could be a dwelling, home, hut, place for; entertainment, rest, sleeping, receiving guest, and a palace. The interpretation of house as shelter makes it a basic necessities of life. Thus the focus of the paper is to identify and document house types in Benin by observing the physical characteristics and type’s classification from the organization and pattern of architectural plan documented. The study explored qualitative and quantitative approach using observations, descriptive frequency, architectural sketches, photographs and interview guide. The findings revealed a cross sectional characterising and classifying houses in Benin City, Nigeria which reflect the typical cross section structure of a traditional city. The result of study would however, influence professional in built environment and policy maker decision positively.
- ItemPromoting ICT and Digital Education in Public Schools in Lagos, Nigeria Using Affordable Clean Energy Solutions(2020-11) Izobo-Martins, OladunniGoal 4 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aims to ensure inclusive and quality education for all including the promotion of lifelong learning. Hence the goal seeks to promote development of the human person through education. This development is best driven by technology through the application of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to digital education. The challenges posed by COVID-19 have further made virtual education which is dependent on the acquisition of ICT and digital skills very imperative. Incidentally, technology based education is dependent on the availability of energy which cannot be guaranteed in a developing country context such as Nigeria. Hence, this study is aimed at examining the energy supply situation in selected public secondary schools in Lagos, Nigeria and their coping strategies for ICT and digital education. The study adopted the qualitative approach with data obtained from observation and interviews. The study found that the schools relied mostly on conventional electricity supply from the national grid which was generally epileptic and unreliable. The schools had standby electricity generators to support mains supply and this is a major source of pollution and carbon emissions. The study thus recommended the use of renewable clean energy systems such as solar electricity through photovoltaic cells to power the equipment used for ICT and digital education
- ItemReconsidering Our Environment Towards a Sustainable Higher Education in the Future(2015-11) Izobo-Martins, OladunniIt has been observed that one significant problem facing the higher institutions in Nigeria is the declination in the performance of the students. Studies have been carried out by several researchers to ascertain the cause of the declining performance and drop outs that is gradually becoming a norm. The phenomenon has been identified as low level of students’ retention. In order for higher institutions to improve the students’ retention, the act of rethinking the environment can enhance and improve the students learning. If higher institutions campus experience by creating environments for speedy integration coupled with the provision of academic advisors. This study brings to focus affordable student center as a medium for student campus integration which would present a creative environment for improving student enthusiasm about schooling, simultaneously improving performance. Therefore, the core of this study is to investigating the decline of students’ performance and drop out in order to establish a sustainable and cost effective higher education environment. The findings show that students’ retention can be improved upon, through the provision of affordable and sustainable student centers in the higher institutions. This paper concludes that if the capacity of an institution is to improve a student’s enthusiasm, then a sustainable and affordable environment would contribute and determine the rate of student retention.
